Oppassen in Chatain 2, Frankrijk (27-06 / 12-07)

Onze twee weken in Chatain zijn goed gevuld. Iedere dag wandelen we een rondje met hond Koosje. En al snel nemen we de bordercollie Collette van de buren mee op onze tochtjes. Haar baasjes, Carola en Henk zijn niet goed ter been en Collette houdt wel van een wandelingetje. Zij gaat mee naar de paarden een half uur lopen door het bos en een hameautje. Collette is niet zoveel gewend. De eerste dag dat we door het dorpje lopen is zij bang voor blaffende honden en schiet als een speer weg. Na een aantal dagen wordt ze socialer en begint ze zelfs te spelen met een buurhond. Ze heeft zelfs een vriend die ons af en toe vergezeld als we terug lopen.

Hondje Koosje is overal bij aanwezig en is dol op Lida. Of het nu paarden verzorgen is, poep ruimen, naar de buren gaan of uitlaten, Koosje houdt Lida goed in de gaten. Waar zij gaat, gaat Koosje. Het zijn dikke maatjes geworden. Koosje is een leuk klein hondje, een kruising tussen een poedel en een chiwawa. Als we alleen met hem wandelen vindt hij een rondje van 2 minuten om het veld wel genoeg. Maar als Collette mee gaat dan is hij stoer en loopt hij fluitend een uur.

De vergezichten in Chatain zijn fantastisch. ’s Nachts fonkelen de sterren aan de hemel. Een paar keer zien we in de verte flitslichten en donkere wolken. We kunnen ze van achter naar voor rondom het huis volgen. Een enorm spektakel. Soms gaat die donder net langs het huis, een paar keer regent het flink. Op een nacht is er zoveel wind dat we de lege plastic flessen, bedoeld voor bewateren van de planten, langs het raam horen rollen. Dus uit bed en opruimen met stromende regen in donderend onweer en een pikzwarte hemel. Die regen is een welkome afwisseling met de hoge temperaturen van overdag. Iedere twee dagen wateren we de plantjes die overal op het terrein staan. Met een niet werkende elektrische kruiwagen geven we plastic flessen en jerrycans met water aan de snakkende planten. Het water halen we uit een kinderbadje dat bedoeld is ter verkoeling, maar het is zo warm als thee water, daar gaan we niet in zitten. We verfrissen ons een paar keer per dag met een mandy uit de kraan achter in de tuin.

Als we online zoeken naar goed organic voedsel in de buurt vinden we een bio dynamische boerderij op een half uurtje rijden. En wat blijkt, de eigenaren van de boerderij winkel komen uit ons eigen Nederland. We kletsen met eigenaresse Maartje van Bio Ferme La Pillanerie. Zij verkopen wat de dieren en de tuin opleveren zoals eieren, boter, groente en echte melk zoals die behoort te zijn. Het proeft als vroeger en bij verwarmen zit er een lekker vel op. Heel leuk adresje.

Op een dag vragen Carola en Henk of we willen oppassen op Collette en hun twee kittens. Ze willen een dagje naar Poitiers. We mogen een paar dozen boeken doorkijken en mee nemen naar Nederland om ze in van die boekenkastjes langs de weg te stoppen. We vinden fantastische boeken, onder andere over de Bhagavad Gita en andere indiase filosofie boeken. Helemaal ons straatje.

Chatain 2, France (06-27 / 07-12)

Our two weeks in Chatain are well stocked. Every day we walk around with dog Koosje. And soon we take the neighbor's border collie Collette with us on our trips. Her owners, Carola and Henk are unsteady and Collette likes a walk. She accompanies us to the horses, half an hour's walk through the forest and a hameau. Collette is not used to much. The first day we walk through the small village she is afraid of barking dogs and shoots away like a spear. After a few days she becomes more social and even starts playing with a neighbor dog. And she has a friend who occasionally accompanies us when we walk back.

Dog Koosje is present everywhere and loves Lida. Whether it's caring for horses, cleaning poop, going to the neighbors or walking, Koosje keeps a close eye on Lida. Where she goes, Koosje goes. They have become best friends. Koosje is a nice little dog, a cross between a poodle and a chiwawa. If we walk alone with him, a 2-minute lap around the field will be enough. But if Collette comes along, he is tough and walks for an hour without complaining.

The views in Chatain are fantastic. At night the stars twinkle in the sky. A few times we see flashlights and dark clouds in the distance. We can follow them from back to front around the house. A huge spectacle. Sometimes that thunder just passes the house, it rains a few times. One night there is so much wind that we hear the empty plastic bottles, intended for watering the plants, rolling along the window. So we get out of bed and clean up with pouring rain in thunderous thunder and a pitch black sky. That rain is a welcome change from the high temperatures of the day.

Every two days we water the plants that are everywhere on the site. With an inoperative electric wheelbarrow we give plastic bottles and jerry cans with water to the dry plants. We get the water from a children's pool that is intended for cooling, but it is as hot as tea water, so we do not sit in it. We refresh ourselves a few times a day with a mandy from the tap in the back of the garden.

If we search online for good organic food in the area, we find a bio dynamic farm half an hour's drive away. And it turns out that the owners of the farm are dutch. We chat with owner Maartje of Bio Ferme La Pillanerie. They sell what the animals and the garden produce, such as eggs, butter, vegetables and real milk as it should be. It tastes like before and when heated it has a nice skin on it. Very nice address. 

One day Carola and Henk ask if we want to petsit Collette and their two kittens. They are off for a day in Poitiers. We have the opportunity to look through a few boxes of books, to take them to the Netherlands and put them in those bookcases along the road. We find fantastic books, including the Bhagavad Gita and other Indian philosophy books. All our alley.
