Thélème Community Experience. Week 1
We zijn op de Thélème Experience aangekomen. Om ons voor te bereiden had Vaillant, de eigenaar, via you tube drie filmpjes gestuurd (zie linkjes onderaan). We krijgen de indruk van een lopende community en het lijkt ons een uitdaging om hier deel van uit te maken.
Even een kleine geschiedenis. Vaillant is een Fransman en heeft 20 jaar in Silicon Valley gewerkt. In maart 2020 ging hij in Costa Rica wonen met een droom. Namelijk een community creëren waar de vier onderdelen die ons mens maken de basis van harmonie vormen, het fysieke, emotionele, mentale lichaam en de spirituele ontwikkeling. Het creëren van een balans tussen individuele vrijheid en verantwoordelijkheid dragen voor het collectief. Costa Rica is een vredig land waar natuurschoon en natuurlijke bronnen, als schoon water en zonneschijn, volop voorradig zijn. Daarbij is er een enorme diversiteit aan natuur. Om de natuurlijke bronnen te stimuleren wordt gebruik gemaakt van permacultuur. Dat is een natuurlijke manier van tuinieren om gezond voedsel te creëren en consumeren.
De Thélème Community wil onderdeel zijn van de omgeving en vanuit het hart leven. De pilaren van Liberté, Equalité en Fraternité, oftewel vrijheid, gelijkheid en broederschap vormen de basis van de samenleving. Deze woorden stammen uit de Franse Revolutie van 1789 - 1799 die in schril contrast stonden tot de toenmalige heersende klasse verschillen. De revolutie legde het zaadje voor een nieuwe grondwet die de idealen zou ondersteunen. Onze huidige tijd lijkt een herhaling van het nastreven van deze idealen.
Afijn, wij komen aan bij een prachtige woning op 1700 meter hoogte die antroposofisch aandoet. Het eerste wat opvalt zijn de lichtblauwe gestuukte muren De lampen zitten in uitstulpingen van de muur. Het dak is hoog en rond en bestaat uit 10 stukken. Het heeft de vorm van een open paraplu en vormt de centrale ruimte waar de hal, de keuken en de kamers, op aansluiten. In de hal staat een fontein. We krijgen een eigen kamer met wc en douche.
We maken kennis met de eigenaresse van het pand, Joselyn. Zij en haar dochter van 8 wonen hier nu 3 jaar samen met Vaillant, haar man. Op dit moment is hij 3 weken naar India voor een yoga retreat , dus zij regelt de zaken in en rondom het huis. Omdat ze beschikken over nog twee andere projecten is Joselyn veel op pad. Ze laat het reilen en zeilen van het huis en de verzorging van de dieren over aan ons, de vrijwilligers. Naast ons zijn er nog twee andere vrijwilligers. Door Judy worden we ingewijd in het werk en zijn daar heel blij mee. In huis wordt veel Spaans gesproken, goed voor onze taalontwikkeling.
De taken van de vrijwilligers zijn voornamelijk gericht op het verzorgen van de dieren. Er zijn 3 geiten, waarvan één baby. We leren hoe we de twee geiten ’s ochtends en ’s avonds met de hand moeten melken. Na zo’n drie dagen krijgen we de slag te pakken. Daarnaast zorgen we voor de poultry, het gevogelte. Er zijn eenden, kalkoenen en kippen die in een grote omheinde ruimte zitten. De kalkoenen slapen in de boom, de eenden in een hok en de kippen in hun overkapte kippenren. Onze dagen beginnen om 7 uur. Het werk eindigt om 13.00 behalve dat de geiten om 17.30 nogmaals gemolken worden. Het overige werk bestaat uit onderhoud in het groen, opknappen van het kippenhok en andere taken die we belangrijk vinden.
Iedere dag maakt een andere vrijwilliger de lunch. Er wordt uitgebreid gegeten en daarna gerust. ’s Avonds genieten we meestal van een prachtige sunset met geweldig uitzicht over meerdere dorpjes. Dit Wwoof project is een stuk rustiger dan het vorige. We hebben er plezier in.

Thélème Community Experience. Week 1
We arrived at the Theleme Experience. We were prepared by three videos via YouTube (see links below) which Vaillant, the owner, had sent us. We got the impression of a vibrant community and we thought it would be a challenge to be part of it.
A brief history. Vaillant is of French origin and worked in Silicon Valley for 20 years. In March 2020, he moved to Costa Rica with a dream: to create a community where the four components that make us human form the foundation of harmony: the physical, emotional, mental body and spiritual development. And to aim on creating a balance between individual freedom and responsibility for the collective. Costa Rica is a peaceful country where natural beauty and resources, such as clean water and sunshine, are abundant. Furthermore, there is an enormous diversity of nature. To stimulate these natural resources, permaculture is used. This is a natural gardening method for creating and consuming healthy food. The Theleme Experience aims to be part of the environment and live from the heart. The pillars of liberté, equalité, and fraternité—freedom, equality, and brotherhood—form the foundation of their vision of the society. These words originate from the French Revolution of 1789–1799, which stood in stark contrast to the prevailing class distinctions of the time. The revolution laid the foundation for a new constitution that would support these ideals. Our current era seems to be a repetition of the pursuit of these ideals.
Anyway, we arrive at a beautiful house at an altitude of 1,700 meters, with an anthroposophical feel. The first thing we notice are the light blue plastered walls. The lamps are built into protrusions of the wall. The roof is high and rounded, consisting of 10 sections. It has the shape of an open umbrella and forms the central space to which the hall, kitchen and bedrooms connect. There is a fountain in the hall. We are given a private room with toilet and shower.
We meet the owner of the house, Joselyn. She and her eight-year-old daughter have been living here with her husband, Vaillant, for three years now. He's currently in India for a three-week yoga retreat, so she's taking care of everything in and around the house. Because they have two other projects, Joselyn is often on the road. She's handing over the running of the house and caring for the animals to us, the volunteers. Besides us, there are two other volunteers. Judy is introducing us to the work, and we're very happy with her experience. Spanish is widely spoken at home, which is good for our language development.
The volunteers' tasks are primarily focused on caring for the animals. There are three goats, one of which is a baby. We're learning how to milk the two goats by hand, morning and evening. After about three days, we're getting the hang of it. We also take care of the poultry: ducks, turkeys, and chickens, all kept in a large, enclosed area. The turkeys roost in the tree, the ducks in a coop, and the chickens in their covered chicken run. Our days begin at 7:00 AM. Work ends at 1:00 PM, except for the goats' final milking at 5:30 PM. The remaining work consists of maintaining the green spaces, renovating the chicken coop, and other tasks we consider important.
Every day, a different volunteer prepares lunch. We have a leisurely meal and then rest. In the evenings, we usually enjoy a beautiful sunset with a magnificent view of several villages. This Wwoof project is much quieter than the previous one. We are enjoying it.
