Onderweg naar zelfvoorziendende boerderij Yuyo

Reizen tussen Los Mineros en Yuyo 27 – 30 juni / Traveling from Los Mineros to Yuyo June 27 - 30
De reden dat we naar Costa Rica zijn gekomen is dat we wilden meewerken met groene projecten. Werken met je handen, perma cultuur, natuurlijk bouwen waren wensen. Yuyo is een zelfvoorzienende boerderij in de jungle bij Puerto Viejo. Dat is aan de zuidoost kant van Costa Rica. En aangezien er geen wegen dwars door het land gaan moeten we terug naar San Jose.
We nemen al vroeg afscheid van Los Mineros en gaan en route naar Quepos of eigenlijk vlakbij naar het plaatsje Manuel Antonio waar ook een nationaal park is. We logeren via airbenb bij Elena en haar zoontje. Het huis staat vlakbij de jungle en je hoort aapjes op het dak springen en weer weg gaan. Is er eigenlijk wel een nationaal park nodig om dit soort dingen te zien. Het wordt al bijna gewoon.
De volgende morgen regelen we toch maar een lokaal nummer bij Liberty, waar je overal reclame borden van ziet. Met het vinden van wegen en zeker in een stad is bereik onmisbaar. We staan om 9 uur in de rij om bij het kantoortje naar binnen te gaan. Veel Costa Ricanen regelen blijkbaar gewoon hun telefoonzaakjes op kantoor. Het scheelt ook een hoop geld met een e-sim. We betalen voor een maand 6000 colones voor 5 gb wat zo’n 12 dollar is. Via het internet hadden we 385 euro mogen betalen voor 5 maanden voor een e-sim.
Afijn, we rijden in zo’n 3 uur naar San Jose. Druk, druk, druk. Tolwegen voor een klein bedrag. Rambutans onderweg gekocht voor toeristenprijsje dat is 6 dollar voor een kilo. Nee Costa Rica is niet goedkoop, de prijzen zijn vergelijkbaar met de USA , al kun je echt ook wel goedkope dingen vinden in niet toeristische omgevingen.
In San Jose logeren we in een vriendelijk Otoya 1907 hotel downtown. Armoede en zwervers zijn hier in overvloed, maar het hotel is goed. We brengen onze auto terug wat ook nog wel enig gedoe is. We vinden niet direct de inleverplek en moeten erg zoeken. In plaats van om 16.00 terug in het hotel zijn we er pas om 18.00. Maar gelukkig is alles geregeld en goed. Eten, slapen en de volgende dag naar Puerto Viejo met de bus vanaf Terminal Atlantico Norte. De taxi brengt ons op tijd bij het station en daar gaan we. Een rit van 5 uur zonder airco. Gelukkig is het regenseizoen, de zon laat zich weinig zien. Het is goed uit te houden, al is de luchtvochtigheid hoog waardoor we regelmatig flink transpireren, althans vocht vasthouden op onze huid. Voelt gewoon nat eigenlijk.
In Puerto Viejo logeren we via airbenb bij Amy in een leuk klein optrekje. Puerto Viejo ligt aan de caribische kant van het land. Dat is te zien, overal zijn rasta kleuren en wijze teksten. Het leven is hier relaxed ook al regent het veel. Een leuke plek om te zijn. We eten ook in een bijzonder restaurant waar we veel vriendelijke aandacht krijgen.
Om 11 uur staat Fernando op maandagochtend voor de poort. Hij brengt ons met zijn tuktuk naar Yuyo. Omdat er politie langs de weg staat moeten we een bochtig en hobbelig weggetje in, omhoog en omlaag in de stromende regen. We proberen droog te blijven zonder succes. We komen aan bij Yuyo. Hier blijven we een maand meewerken op de boerderij. Een mooi groot complex, waar we hartelijk worden ontvangen en onze eerste spaanse les nemen. Traveling from Los Mineros to Yuyo June 27 - 30
The reason we came to Costa Rica is that we wanted to participate in green projects. Working with your hands, perma culture, natural building were desires. Yuyo is a self-sustaining farm in the jungle near Puerto Viejo. That's on the south east side of Costa Rica. And since there are no roads across the country, we have to go back to San Jose.
We say goodbye to Los Mineros early and go en route to Quepos or actually nearby to the town of Manuel Antonio where there is also a national park. We stay with Elena and her son via airbenb. The house is close to the jungle and you can hear monkeys jumping on the roof and leaving. Does it actually take a national park to see things like this. It's almost becoming commonplace already.
The next morning we still arrange for a local number at Liberty, whose advertising signs you see everywhere. With finding roads, special in a city, range is indispensable. We line up at 9 a.m. to go in at the little office. Many Costa Ricans apparently just take care of their phone business at the office. It also saves a lot of money with an e-sim. We pay 6000 colones for a month for 5 gb which is about $12. Through the internet we should have paid 385 euros for 5 months for an e-sim.
Affine, we drive to San Jose in about 3 hours. Busy, busy, busy. Toll roads for a small fee. Rambutans bought on the way for tourist price that is 6 dollars for a kilo. No, Costa Rica is not cheap, prices are similar to the USA , although you can really find cheap things too in non-touristic areas.
In San Jose we stay at a friendly Otoya 1907 hotel downtown. Poverty and vagrants abound here, but the hotel is good. We return our car which is also a bit of a hassle. We can't find the drop-off point right away and have to search a lot. Instead of being back at the hotel at 4 p.m. we are not there until 6 p.m. But fortunately everything is arranged and good. Dinner, sleep and the next day to Puerto Viejo by bus from Terminal Atlantico Norte. The taxi gets us to the station on time and here we go. A 5-hour ride with no air conditioning. Fortunately it is the rainy season, the sun does not show itself much. It is not too bad, although the humidity is high so we regularly perspire, or at least retain moisture on our skin. Just feels wet actually.
In Puerto Viejo we stay with Amy via airbenb in a nice little cottage. Puerto Viejo is on the Caribbean side of the country. It shows, with rasta colors and wise texts everywhere. Life is relaxed here even though it rains a lot. A nice place to be. We also eat in a special restaurant where we get a lot of friendly attention.
At 11 a.m. on Monday morning, Fernando is at the gate. He takes us with his tuktuk to Yuyo. Because there are police along the road, we have to go up and down a winding and bumpy road in the pouring rain. We try to stay dry without success. We arrive at Yuyo. Here we stay for a month working on the farm. A beautiful large complex, where we are warmly received and take our first Spanish lesson. Hasta luego, until next time, then we will tell more.
