Dominicalito pet sitting, 17-22 juni
Toch maar even kijken op trusted housesitters of er in Costa Rica (CR) een sit is, zegt Gab op 13 juni terwijl we nog in de USA zijn. Tot nu toe is opgevallen dat zodra er een sit is in CR die ook bijna meteen is vervuld. We reageren op een last minute sit en na een telefoontje en contact met Amy wordt de sit bekrachtigd. De data matchen prima, wij komen de 16e aan in Costa Rica, zij zijn de 17e weg.
We rijden na Jaco in 2,5 uur naar Dominical zuidelijk langs de kust van de Pacific Ocean. Het wordt rustiger op de weg, het landschap blijft tropisch. De routeplanner Waze stuurt ons een weg in waar water in een geul staat zonder brug, daar kunnen we niet verder. Een stukje verder gaan we omhoog. De instructies van Amy zijn duidelijk. Ga een gravelweg in, langs de Poza Azul waterval omhoog etc. Na een spannende klim met flink wat kuilen in de weg komen we bij een luxe villa. Uitzicht op zee, modern interieur, vriendelijke hond. Het huis staat in een wijkje met meerdere vrijstaande huizen, vooral Amerikaanse eigenaren. Om hier te komen gaan we door het dorpje Dominicalito waar simpele huizen op elkaar staan met grote ijzeren hekken erom heen. We worden vriendelijk begroet door Amy en we krijgen een snelle rondleiding. Claude de buurman brengt haar naar het vliegveld van Quepos, uurtje rijden. Claude komt uit Zimbabwe en brengt via een vriend zijn oude dag in Costa Rica door. Voor hem is alles vooruitgang wat hij meemaakt.
We brengen de dagen relaxed door. Het is hier echt de tropen. Om 18.00 is het pikkedonker na een korte schemer. We gaan vroeg naar bed, de eerste avond al om 19.00 en staan vroeg op doordat de howler monkeys of brulapen ons wekken. Zij leven in groepjes van 8 à 15 apen en hebben een speciaal gevormd strottenhoofd, waardoor ze werkelijk kunnen brullen. Aan de rechterkant van het huis begint het geluid en dat zwelt aan tot de linkerkant als een soort golf die de lucht vult. Oorverdovend en fascinerend. Dit geheel wordt aangevuld met allerlei tropische vogelgeluiden. Het is 5 uur, wij staan op, het nieuwe leven is begonnen.
Op een morgen gaan we om 6.00 uur met hond Walt naar het strand. Wij gebruiken de jeep van Amy. Walt springt achterin en heeft er zin in. Bij het strand staan een aantal simpel gebouwde, open restaurantjes die aan Indonesië doen denken. Het is grote pret voor Walt. Stokken gooien en zwemmen in het water. Bij een surf schooltje krijgen wat toeristen surf les. Het is simpel en heerlijk vertoeven in de vroege ochtend.
Wij rijden steeds langs de waterval Poza Azul. Die moeten we natuurlijk even bezoeken. Walt is gek op water en de waterval is minstens zo leuk als het strand. Hond Walt is een grote hond, 10 jaar en dol op stokken en zijn frisbee. We trekken en gooien en spelen veel met hem.
Ook bezoeken we een eco feria in Dominical, een marktje met kunst en lokale producten. We kopen op advies van de koopman een helende thee die is nodig om ons aan te passen aan het klimaat. De toeristen prijzen zijn niet anders dan in Noord Amerika.
Het regenseizoen slaat hier goed toe. Na een paar mooie dagen begint het flink te regenen. Niet een hollands buitje maar een ‘heavy t-storm’ ofwel een flinke tropische regenbui die lijkt op een waterval met bliksemflitsen die de hele slaapkamer verlichten en keiharde donder die 3 miles doordenderen. Omdat alle muren van het huis alleen maar raam zijn lijkt het of je ín de storm zit. Walt is bang, dus doet hij alsof hij een schoothondje is door op ons te kruipen. Iets te zwaar.
Het uitrusten doet ons blijkbaar goed, we worden na elkaar ziek met koorts en verkoudheid. Er is tijd voor een dagje onder de wol. We zijn in de jungle, dat is duidelijk.

Dominicalito pet sitting, June 17-22
Let's have a look on trusted housesitters for a sit in Costa Rica (CR), says Gab. It’s June 13th, we are still in the USA. Sits in CR fill almost immediately. We respond on a sit and an hour later we have contact with Amy. A day and a phone call later we have a sit. The dates match perfectly, we arrive in Costa Rica on the 16th, they are leaving on the 17th.
The 2,5 hour drive goes south along the coast of the Pacific Ocean from Jaco to Dominical. The road becomes more quiet, the landscape remains tropical. Route planner Waze sends us down a road with water in a gully and no bridge impossible to pass. A little further we can go up. Amy's instructions are clear. Take a gravel road, pass the Poza Azul waterfall, follow 2 mile etc. After an exciting climb with quite a few potholes we arrive at a luxury villa. View on the sea, modern interior, friendly dog. The house is located in an area with several houses, mainly American owners. To get here we pass the village of Dominicalito where simple houses are on top of each other with large iron fences around them.
We are greeted kindly by Amy and we get a quick tour. Claude the neighbor takes her to the airport of Quepos, an hour's drive. Claude comes from Zimbabwe and spends his pensionado years in Costa Rica via a friend. For him everything is progress.
We spend the days relaxed. It is really the tropics here. At 18:00 it is pitch dark after a short twilight. We go to bed early, the first evening already at 19:00 and get up early because the howler monkeys wake us up. They live in groups of 8 to 15 monkeys and have a specially formed larynx, which allows them to really roar. The sound starts on the right side of the house and swells to the left side like a kind of wave that fills the air. Deafening and fascinating. This is complemented by all kinds of tropical bird sounds. It is 5 o'clock, we get up, the new life has begun.
One morning we go to the beach at 6.00 with dog Walt. We use Amy's jeep. Walt jumps in the back and is excited. At the beach there are a number of simply built, open restaurants that remind us of Indonesia. It is great fun for Walt. Throwing sticks and swimming in the water. At a surf school some tourists are being given surfing lessons. It is simple and wonderful to stay in the early morning.
We always drive past the Poza Azul waterfall. Of course we have to visit it. Walt is crazy about water and the waterfall is at least as nice as the beach. Dog Walt is a big dog, 10 years old and loves sticks and his frisbee. We pull and throw and play with him a lot.
We also visit an eco feria in Dominical, a market with art and local products. On advice of the merchant we buy a healing tea that is necessary to adapt to the climate. The tourist prices are no different than in North America.
The rainy season hits hard here. After a few nice days it starts to rain heavily. Not a Dutch shower but a ‘heavy t-storm’ or a heavy tropical rain shower that looks like a waterfall with hard thunder and lightning flashes that hold to 3 miles. Because all the walls of the house are windows it feels like you are in the middle of the storm. Walt is scared so he acts like a lap dog by crawling on top of us. A bit too heavy.
We get sick one after the other with fever and colds. There is time for a day doing nothing. We are in the jungle, that much is clear.
